I was born in Kaunas Lithuania just as WW2 was ending. My family moved to Kaunas from Berlin Germany because Berlin was being bombed and it was not a safe place to live or be born. My father was the director of a ballet company in Berlin and had family in Lithuania. There was food at my fathers sisters and it was not being bombed, it was safe and we were comfortable or as comfortable as we could expect during the war. Lithuania was occupied by the Nazis and my aunts neighbor found out we had German citezenship and reported us to the Nazis. We were deported back to Germany as the Nazis were preparing for the last stand and called all German citizens back to fight the last stand. We lived in several towns in Germany and eventually settled in Augsburg Germany as the war ended. My first memories are of Augsburg and the ancient building we lived in. Augsburg has a wonderful history and was founded as a Roman garrison in 14 BC and became a commercial and banking center in the 15th and 16th century. It was the center of extreme wealth as the home of the Fugger family and was involved in international financial dealings by merchants, weavers and goldsmiths. It is a beautiful city of fountains, churches, frescos and art everywhere. This is what I remember as a boy, also that my first playground was a bombed out building across the street from where we lived, Augsburg was heavily bombed during the war. As a boy all I knew was that there were wonderful places to play and the ruins were just a good playground. |
